Genesis 15:8-11 (New International Version)

“But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"  9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."

10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.”

The short track in the Olympics is fast paced action and when you watch it long enough you begin to catch head moving in a circular motion.  The skaters are so close to each other and when it gets real intense you can see them fighting  for position.  They move quickly and there is absolutely no mercy.  They skate for the front spot and they go after it.  They use their hands, legs and bodies to be first.  This is one Olympic sport that shows the importance of not only speed and skill, but determination.

Abraham had just seen an incredible vision from the Lord.  This man who had no children of his own was promised that one day he would be a father to so many only the stars of the sky could give him an idea what that would look like.  Abraham wanting to know how this would happen was told by God to prepare a sacrifice to be used to make a covenant between him and God.  This was a common covenant tradition in that time.  Covenants were serious and God was very serious about his covenant with Abraham.  Abraham was too.  When the birds of prey came to steal away what he had prepared, Abraham took charge and fought away those pesky thieves.  There would be no thievery of this covenant or his promise from God.  Abraham would fight for it and he drove away the birds who were trying to take what was not theirs.

When God gives us a promise there are going to be many opportunities for the enemy to try to steal your peace in God’s promise.  When God says you are going to make it, the enemy is going to tell you, “No you’re not!”  When God says to trust Him, the enemy will tell you to only trust yourself and what you can see.   Believe me, there are spiritual speed skaters and birds of prey trying to steal what is yours.  In these moments is when we have to fight for what is ours.  Not with ice skates and bird cages.  This fight is with the weapons of our spiritual warfare.  Prayer, God’s Word, Faith and Obedience!  When the thieves show up to take your peace, joy and confidence, fight them off with the Word of God.  Fight them with reminding them that this is God’s dream for you and nobody or nothing is going steal it from you.  God has made a covenant with us through Christ.  His promises are “Yes and Amen”.  His promises are ours and when the enemy tries to knock you off your skates, give him the big elbow to the eyebrow and say, “Not Today Pal!”

Have a great day!

I like the idea of the elbow to satan & his imps.
