Matthew 14:30 (New International Version)
“Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
I remember as a kid watching a TV show called “Zoom”. It was on the PBS station back in the 70’s and than later in the early 90’s. Let me help you remember by putting the jingle in your head, “Come on and zoom, zoom zooma zoom…” Do you remember it? How about when they gave the address to write the show? "Write ZOOM, Z-Double-O-M, Box 3-5-0, Boston, Mass 0-2-1-3-4: send it to ZOOM!". Now for you hard core children of the ‘70’s I trust that you are humming along as you read the rest of this eDevo. On one episode, a kid built paneled shoes to walk on water. I remember being amazed that he could build such a contraption. It showed him walking across a small pond on these huge Styrofoam shoes. As I was reflecting on Peter walking on the water to Jesus, I thought about this kid. Though he was walking on water, he was far from doing something supernatural. He was a genius in my eyes, but there was nothing supernatural about it.
I believe Peter stepping out of a boat and walking on water was a supernatural event. He didn’t just watch an episode of Zoom. He heard Jesus say, “Come!” and Peter got out of the boat and walked. Now right there is an amazing thing. On a boat in the fourth watch of the night and he steps out to walk on water. Would you? Peter’s step of faith was outside of what he knew would work and into a realm of what God told Him would work. When Peter walked, He walked on the word Jesus spoke. That one word, “Come!” had the power to hold Peter up. He walked on truth and it took him places he had never been. As a fisherman, I’m sure he fell out of the boat a few times. He was familiar what the water looked like swimming and what it looked like in the safety of the boat, but never had he seen the waves underneath his feet as a support.
Peter chose to allow the supernatural to impact the natural. But when he shifted his faith into the natural, the wind and waves, the natural began to impact the supernatural. No longer was he walking on water, but now he was sinking. To cry out, “Lord, save me!” must have meant he was in big trouble. He wasn’t going for a swim. He was scared for his life. When we walk in the supernatural of God, we will go places that are not always comfortable. Times of true trust will be needed. It is here where we must focus on Jesus and His ability through us. When God asks you to pray for somebody to be healed, it may mean taking a step out of your comfort zone. But if He says go and pray, get out of the boat and go. Keep your eyes on Him. And if by chance the waves distract you and they will, do what Peter did. Cry out to the one who invited you to go to what I will call in this eDevo, the “Zoomernatural” level. He is there and will pull you up and set you back on course.
Come on and zoom into the supernatural by putting your trust in Jesus today! All things are possible with Him!
PS - I would love to hear from you “zoom” fans. I hope I’m not the only one. J
