So Wednesday June 30th, I was diagnosed with GD, and the one who told me I was GD, was not my OBGYN, it was the Gestational Diabetes Specialist. Now let me explain a little history here. The day I found out I was pregnant I called in an Apt. with the UTMB clinic, which is a woman clinic in my area, and I went in while I was waiting for Medicaid to kick in so I could go see my doctor because I don't have insurance. So I went, and since my dad is a diabetic they did the 1 hour test, and my lvls were a little elevated, so I was called back for a 3 hour test, I went in and took that, and waited till my next doc apt there, to find out results, and I was told there that all was good, and I'd be tested again at 24weeks. So I felt I was in the clear.
I finally get my medicaid and go to my obgyn, and he reads my records from the UTMB, and says that it looks like I might have GD, and he wanted to get further testing, so he sent me to the lab, and I did more blood work, and it was just the 1 hour test again, I never get a call back, saying I needed a 3 hour test again, I figured I'd find out July 5th, on my doc apt. No, I get a call last week to go to the specialist on June 30th, I figured it was for more testing.
I fasted, because I wanted to be safe rather then sorry and have to go back again, and they prick my finger and my lvl with no food is 82. I'm not sure what is good and what is bad yet. Well then he tells me that he is putting me in the hospital for 48 hours for observation and to learn how to use insulin. Now I am confused because the OB said that my lvls were just a little elevated, so would I really need insulin? Would I really need to go to the hospital to learn to use insulin, for 48 hours? Do you think maybe there is more to it?
My son was with me and we had sat in this little waiting room for 2.5 hours, and he was going stir crazy. So when we got back there he was ready to leave. I had him under control, but it took all I had in me to keep him under control, so asking more questions was really hard to do at the time. Though when he told me about hospital stay, it just put me in a shock, and I looked at him with a dumb founded look on my face. After I snapped out of that, I said "Is it really necessary for me to stay 48 hours to learn insulin?" and honestly I can't remember all he said, he talked so soft, and my son like I said was going stir crazy. I just told myself I'd just roll with it.
His office called the next day to let me know that the hospital admission was taken care of, and to eat a good breakfast before I went in. I asked her when I more level headed "Now can you please explain again, why I have to go to the hospital?" And once again I get "You are going to learn how to use the insulin"... This just doesn't set well I don't know...
That all sounds really weird. I failed the one hour, my ob gyn told me immediately, scheduled me for 3 hour, which they told me every hour about the levels. If you pass 2 out of 3 you are in clear, but my first one was really high, so they send me to a specialist. After trying to control my levels with diet, my fastings were still too high, they gave me insulin. taught me in the office in 10 minutes, it really is not rocket science. It seems like they are not telling you everything. I just can't see why you would need to be in the hospital for 48 hours and why did it take them that long to diagnose you. Seems just shady.

Well I know that when I was going to the clinic, they told me I was in the clear, but when I went to my doctor, that was my first apt. Last month with him, and he sent me right away for the 1 hour test, and then was sent to the specialist last week, and now the hospital stay this week. I have an apt with my OBGYN tomorrow, and will find out if he knows why. Maybe he can better fill me in.
Well I talked to my OBGYN and asked him why I was being put into the hospital. He explained that around here procedure is to put someone who is pregnant with diabetes who needs insulin, in the hospital, to run some tests, have a nutritionist come see me and put me on a diet, someone is going to teach me how to use the insulin, they are also going to let my blood sugar almost bottom out to show me how this feels and explain what I need to do and what I always need to have on hand. They will also be keeping an eye on me and baby to make sure my body can handle the insulin, I guess some women can't handle it. So, I'm ok and just glad my doctor is taking precaution and wanting to keep an eye on me. I feel better that I know more of why.
No my first test was 184.

I had my one hour test my level was 201. And yours was 82. That don't make no sense to me. Even with my being 201 but I was 8weeks then I went on just an diet. I went to a class to learn how to check my levels.. but I do wish u luck sweetie and hope everything works out for you.. good luck
I just got home today and I learned a lot while there. They do usually do an out patient at the hospital for GD, but since I am on Medicaid, Medicaid requires us to stay in for 3 days and 2 nights.
Quoting hairmommy1977:I am glad he shed some light on it for you and you feel more comfortable. Good luck, let us know how it turned out.
