My husband and I were talking last night about what kind of testing they will be doing to the baby right after she is born because of me having Gestational Diabetes. Has anyone talked to their Dr. about this yet? I plan on talking to my Dr. at my appointment this week but thought i would ask on here.

I can tell you with my son they told me after he is born he will need to be tested (they prick their heel), to check their sugar. With GD babies, they can have low blood sugar, and if they do, they let you kn that they will need to feed the baby right away, my son needed a bottle right away.

It was similar with me. My baby had to be in the nursery the first night, because of her low sugar. They need to monitor exactly how much they eat. Even though I wanted to breastfeed, them feeding her formula and sugar water was still a better option to me than an IV. It made the breastfeeding a litle challenging but we made it.

They had to keep my oldest in the NICU overnight also. After that I got to have him in the room, but he had to go back to the nursery to have his sugar levels checked every 3 hours for the next 2 days.

Nothing with my daughter. She had a heel prick sugar test when she was born but that was it. I controlled my gestational diabetes well with only diet so there were no concerns with her or me after her birth.
