If you have GD having your doctor test once a week is NOT good. You should be testing 4-5 times a day! Once first thing in the morning, then 2 hours after every meal! I'd go and buy a meter right away and some strips. You can get store brands...most use the same meter called TrueTrac, but of all of the stores, CVS, Rite Aid that use them Walgreens has the best deal for strips.
The meter is about $15 and they sometimes have deals to get the meter for free when you buy the strips. And the strips are about $15-$20 for 50!
If you have medicaid or insurance get a perscription for the meter and strips. With my medicaid I get a 100 pack of One Touch ultra strips for just $1 Retail price of them is $115!!!!!
2 hours After meals your blood sugar levels should be 120 or less, if they are higher than that you may need medication or insulin or simply cut back on that particuliar food!
I agree with the PP, thirst can be a sign of high blood sugar, so I would call your dr and talk with him/her about it. If you've been diagnosed GD I don't understand why you would only be testing once a week, you really should be testing after every meal and first thing in the morning. Definitely call your dr and if he/she blows you off it's time to find a specialist :-)

Thirst is a big warning sign for high blood sugar! Its your body trying to flush out the excess sugar but have no water to do the job. Most pregnant women are recommanded to drink AT LEAST 8 glasses of water per day, so are you drinking enough water?
If you have GD, get a meter regardless of what your doctor says just so you can figure out EXACTLY what kind of GD you have; there's hypo and hyper glycemia, I just found out last night, and both can create complications. The more you can figure out on your own, the better you can fine tone your diet and exercise plans. Best wishes :)
I'm agreeing with everyone on here about testing more than once a week. I have never heard of that if you have GD. Did your doctor give you a reason why you don't have to test 4 times a day? As soon as I was told I had GD the doctors office sent in a script for my meter and testing supplies, an appointment with a diabetic councelor was made, as well as a nutritionist. I thought that was pretty standard! I agree that you should call your doctor ASAP and find out what the deal is. I'm SURE your excessive thrist is due to this!
