When my son was small we began every school year the same, we took pictures of my son in the lobby of our condo building where we lived then, against the brick walls. This gave us a series of pictures which showed very graphically his growth from year to year.
My son is an EMT and later this afternoon he starts the one year Medic class with which he will raise his state certification to full Paramedic and which will allow him to then work toward advancement to CCT. So before he left he came back into my bedroom and said how he would like to go to 800, our old home, and take pictures like we always did on the first day of school. It brought me to tears and when he hugged me I just didn't want to let go. He may be twenty-one, over six feet, and a compassionate, responsible First Responder but he's still my baby and as on every one of those first days I send him off with my love and the hope that the universe will treat him gently as he learns.
