Watching dvds in the car

Do you let your kids watch dvds in the car?  What are your rules for when they can?

Only when we go on trips. No other time are they allowed. I think kids are way too plugged in nowadays.

Most of the time I do not.  Even on long multiple day car trips.  We've driven from MN to the Southeast, from MN to CA & MN to Washington DC without using dvds (or other electronic toys).

My one exception is if someone is sick.  Sick kids aren't necessarily up to entertaining themselves in the car so I do allow dvds then.  Luckily, that has only happened once - on the way home from Kansas City.

What do you define as a long trip?  Anything over x hours?  If you're spending the night?

Do you have the iPad with 3g or 4g service, or do you download movies to it?

We dont have a dvd player in the car and even if we did, our longest trips are only 15 minutes most the time

When we go on trips: in laws are 5 hours away, one brother 4 hours and the other 8, my brother is 9. All of those times. We went to Disney this summer, there was a rule- each could pick one movie and then they had to do something else (color, nap, etc) for an hour before we turned on another. There is also an outlet mall about 45 minutes from us, when we go they have to agree on one, half on the way up, half on the way home. Otherwise it stays off. We don't even keep DVDs in the van so I'm not tempted!

Any time over an hour we bring ours.
