Yarn Laced Note Cards

In an increasingly digital world, there's just something nice about a good old fashioned card. These note cards are inspired by lacing cards. So not only will your child strengthen his/her fine motor skills making these, they'll score bonus points in the creativity and etiquette categories too. Make a bunch to send to the grandparents, use for teacher appreciation notes or contemporary style birthday cards. They're completely customizable—no two have to look the same!

What you'll need

  • blank cards
  • hole punch or awl
  • length of yarn
  • tape

How to make it

1. Use a hole punch or awl to punch holes around the card.

Next, wrap a a bit of tape around one end of the yarn. You'll want it stiff but not bulky. This will act as a needle.

Knot the other end of the yarn.

2. Now, have your child 'sew.' He or she can make any pattern they like.

When he or she is finished, knot the end of yarn and trim.

3.All that's left is to write a note!

Do you think your kids would like this craft? Who are some people they would want to make one for?

We never did this as a greeting card (although my kids did make a lot of their own creative greeting cards. )

BUT I did heavy posterboard and draw with permanent marker a simple various shapes on each card  and then different colors of laces or yard or ribbon for them to "sew" in and out of the holes with when they were young. They loved "sewing" this was another good in the car travel toy also. It also was first pre step to actually teaching them to sew later on in elementary which they are all good at now.

My kids have the harder cardboard cards with holes and laces to practice lacing and hand eye coordination.  They like those so I think they would like this :)
