I'm thinking of taking one but don't have a passport, I heard that you can visit the various ports as long as you are part of a close loop cruise. But has anyone done this? Just wondering if it'd be a big hassle.

You do not need a passport on a closed loop cruise. You need a STATE-issued birth certificate and a state-issued ID.

I just got a passport ID and that was fine. Cheaper than a passport, just can't use it if there's an emergency and you need to fly.

You do not need a passport to cruise, however in an emergency you would not be able to fly. Dh & I have our first cruise booked for this winter and we decided to get Passports because should something happen to our kids or grandkids back home we would need to get here. We also thought about, what if something happened to one of our kids who are gooing with us? If they were hospitalized on an island, they as well as dh or I would have to fly home.
