I went to meet the principal at my son's school, when I got the letter it mentioned the fact that school supplies would be provided to families that needed them.
So, meeting day came and I went, when I arrived to the school I saw an area with a huge amount of people in line, there it was the principal giving backpacks and school supplies, I am all for free stuff (who doesn't??) but when you don't really need it why being greedy?? The reason why I felt embarrassed was because all the people in line were hispanic dressed in very nice clothes with kids dressed in brand clothes and when the principal stepped down to talk to some parents including me what happened next was extremely shameful, some parents went like piranhas over the school supplies, taking more than they should while other families waiting in line started complaining and yelling.
The worst part was hearing two people talking among themselves who probably assumed I didn't speak english saying: And they wonder why we don't want them here? I just looked at them and said not all hispanics are like that and walked away.
I am all for free stuff but when other people really need it why taking it away from them? Why acting like you need handouts when you really don't? Uggggghhhh, vent over.
I had a similar experience once and it still bothers me. We went to a Day of the Dead festival and they had sugar skulls already made for the kids to decorate and the rule was only 2 per person. I overheard one mom and her son talking:
Mom: agarra dos
Son: No mas quiero pintar una
Mom: no importa, agarralos
Still drives me nuts.
Another thing, I used to volunteer at a free health clinic where maybe 75% of the patients were Hispanic. We had this form for them to fill out asking about income and household size and such and it always drove me crazy how so many Hispanic folks would write that they made $200/month for a family of 6, yet they were wearing gold and driving very nice trucks. I hate saying that because I feel like I am racially profiling, but you could definitely see the difference between the quality of material goods (cars, clothing, jewlery) that Hispanic families had versus those of the white patients. I'd love to get some other opinions on this!
Everyone needs to make an effort to be honest and leavE greed behind so that these stigmas go away.

It's just funny you mention this because my husband (who is a white american man) asked me the other day, how come we drive a POS car but that mexican family over there (neighbours of us) drive a huge fancy truck? I said, as far as I know that couple work cash jobs and probably more than one job each and they don't go out or on trips like we do, so they save every penny they make...this is what I told my husband since I have known many illegal people who do this. But once I got to know this couple I found out they only have one job each, cash of course, they don't pay taxes, they get government help like food stamps, don't know how since I know illegal immigrants don't have access to that (as far as I know), they get food from Open Door (which is a food pantry) and many other things, talking to this mom she was telling me how to go get "advantage" of the system and I just told her, no thaks I am fine.
So you are NOT racial profiling, unfortunately the many that come here to just mooch of the different states they live in make us all look bad. I do accept that if I ever be in the need of going for food stamps I would but once you get on your feet then let that be left for someone else who actually needs it.

The thing that really gets me (and it's true for everyone, not just Hispanic people) is that there is no shame in doing this kind of thing. I'm not against food stamps or handouts as help for people to get back on their feet, but it has become a lifestyle and people are not embarressed or ashamed of it.
Will what I would do is step up and would of said don't lie. And only take what you need. I show respect for me and my family.
You want respect than you have to show it.

I would of stood in front of the table and would of said something in spanish.
I want respect for me and mine!
I feel the same way.
I think the worst part is what these parents are teaching their kids by doing that.
