I have a lawn full of clovers and dandelions. Normally I wouldn't mind, except they attract bees and make our lawn almost unusable for the kids to play in.
Now, I don't want to cover my lawn in toxins. That makes it unusable for the kids too. Some studies I've read even talk about how all the toxins from outside chemicals end up in your house and are detectable for more than two years after the last application, and can get into the air in your house if your neighbor sprays their lawn even.
Yikes!
So, how do you guys tackle the weeds without poisoning your whole family, pets and neighbors?
We don't and will not ever poison our lawn. We have weeds, weeds, weeds but it's really no problem. Where the kids play almost all of the flower weeds are picked and in the house. LOL!! Our neighbors do spray their lawns and it makes me furious! We pull alot of weeds mostly we just let them be.
Pull them...you can make a game of it with the kids. Vinegar works super well also. Might have to do a few applications and you need to be careful because it'll kill the grass around the weeds super quick also.
Abby LOVES bees. We have loads of bees and lots of wasps and the like. The kids have learned to not react abruptly around them. We also planted a couple of bushes that the bees and wasps like better than the weeds in the yard.
Hey you know what LOVES dandelions??
Tortoises!
We used to have an awesome russian tortoise (that was stolen from us)! We lived in an apartment, but we used to bring him to my mothers house and let him go to town on her dandelions.
He couldn't clear a whole yard but he would eat a TON before stopping. He would eat leaves, but the flowers were his favorite.
Dest, bees are our biggest problem. If it weren't for the fact that our clovers and dandelions attract enough bees that our yard becomes unusable, I wouldn't mind as much.
Wendy, can't say I'm going to run out and buy a tortoise, but a day in my yard would be tortoise heaven!
Oh very cool, I had never seen one of those before. Thanks!

Quoting SabrinaLC:We pull them by hand :-(
Time consuming but chemical free. At our last house we just let them grow but now we have HOA rules to follow :-(
Have you checked out a "Grandpa's Weeder"? Saves your back a little pain at least.
