Hi!

My oldest daughter was diagnosed with GD at the age of 5. She got REALLY sick, meds didn't work, her heart started doing really weird things so she had to be on heart meds, lost weight, looked like a cancer patient, was sick EVERY week with bronchitis, flu, pneumonia, colds, etc.

It was the worst 9 months of our lives. She was the worst case our specialists had EVER seen.

The next year (about 9-10 months after diagnosis, we took drastic measures and had her swallow the radioactive iodine pill to destroy her thyroid gland. From there, her heart became normal, gained weight, looks normal, doesn't get sick AS often, and now has to take the synthroid pill everyday.

One of the long lasting side effects she has from having GD is that her bones quickly developed. Way faster than her body. So, right now...she's 8 years and 7 months old BUT she has the body of a 10 year and 5 month old. It's really weird.

Another one is, her eyes slightly bulge out. It's not noticeable until she gets excited and her eyes open wide. That's probably the most scary of everything. She still has to go they puberty and have all the changes so that could be worse. As an adult, it could get worse also, and there are certain things she could do (like smoking - that's the WORST thing you can do if you have GD) to cause her eyes to bulge. Some people have it so badly they have to shave down their eye sockets. A coworker of my MIL has it like that. She smokes.

Anyways, I started rambling. Please, if you have ANY questions feel free to ask me. I'm pretty well versed when it comes to this. I've researched til I almost died. My daughter was part of a research study at the clinic because of it.

Wow that's terrible. Thanks for sharing. I hope she does well as she ages. My eyes bulge too and that's the worst thing I hate. Its not scary but I have big eyes to begin with. Also I use to be pretty chunky but now I'm down to a size 9. Most of all I hate how my face has thinned out. I do smoke. I quit for yrs until after I had my son and found out about the graves. I started back up again. I only smoke at night. Wish I could quit again.

She lost a lot of weight also. She was very tall to be 5, but was the size (lb wise) of a 3 year old. My 3 yr old was heavier that her. Her face was sunken in so she looked like she was actively going thru chemo. I had LOTS of questions when I would take her to town. Her Kindergarden year is when she was the sickest, and she missed 84 days out of 180.

I would highly recommend not smoking. Have you ever tried electronic cigs?
