A friend sent the above link to me. It's an article on how gardening is healthy for children. Though we Iive in an apartment and I have a brown thumb I still encourage my kids to do what they can. Hopefully one day we will have a house with a yard and they can grow more things.

This is my son last summer watering our square foot gardens. We also have several large conventional gardens. I agree that growing things with your children is essential. We grown organic produce year round.
For the OP....you can easily grow potatoes in containers in your apt. or balcony. It's super easy!

I also get the Natural News emails; they often have great tips!
You would be surprised at what you can grow indoors, in a container: carrots, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, mixed lettuces, etc. You may save some money, too. Here is a link to help you get started: http://www.gardenguides.com/685-guide-container-gardening.html

So far I just have flowers... lol I wish I had the space for veggies. As it stands I have a rabbit problem, and I can't imagine what it would be if I did have stuff they "liked" in my yard.

OP, you could grow try and grow some herbs inside!
We have a pretty big garden and we started a lot of it by seeds (a lot of them did not survive the transplant though) but he was able to see them grow from the seed to become a plant. We did his sunflowers this way and planted them outside. Those are his plants and he waters them everyday and also helps me with the garden but those are his plants.
The other day we were out aand I picked him up and said Landon you are getting so big! and he replied back Yes, like my sunflowers!

My Son helps me in the garden daily. He has his own sunflowers that he has watched grow since seedlings. They recently bloomed and he is all excited about it. He also helped me harvest our first batch of cucumbers recently. I could see that he understood the connection between our hard work and being able to enjoy the veggies during dinner. Now he asks when the tomatoes, onions and peppers will be ready!

My kids have been helping in the garden for 3 years. They will usually only help for a few minutes at a time and they occasionally squish a plant, but they have fun.
