I have been having the argument with my spouse for close to seventeen years! Yes, there is spray; and yes, it gets on toothbrushes!

Exposed toothbrushes risk unhealthy bacterial and viral contamination

Sunday, January 16, 2011 by: Tony Isaacs, citizen journalis

Many of us have heard that flushing toilets could result in unsanitary airborne particles that make their way onto our toothbrushes. In recent years, largely to a segment on the popular "Mythbusters" show, the idea of water droplets traveling from the toilet to our toothbrushes has been cast as a sort of urban myth. However, what Mythbusters actually found did not disprove the idea of particles traveling from the toilet to toothbrushes, nor did it provide any rationale for leaving toothbrushes exposed.

Anyone who has ever flushed a toilet while sitting on it has likely felt droplets ofwatersplash upwards. The spread of toilet water is not limited to just those particles large enough to be felt. Thanks to "the aerosol effect", a veritable cloud of tiny droplets travels far outside the toilet when it is flushed.

Seventeen years!  I've been trying to train my family for a few years now and it's only getting through to the younger ones.  Our toothbrushes are kept in the bathroom cabinet, but still....ewwww!

I've never even thought about it.
I dont know how much good it will do for my 2 year old. He puts that toothbrush (and his mouth for that matter) on just about everything he can find. It's disgusting.

I need to find a spot for our toothbrushes. I have seen this thing that hangs on the wall and keeps them from exposure, I can't remember what it's called though.

We cover out toothbrushes but I still try to close it. DD likes to watch everything go down though.

I have been keeping the lid down since before I had children. Because of this info,my kids have never left the lid up while flushing. When I first heard about this, I threw out me and my husband's toothbrushes.

Good info.

I'm sooooo OCD about this... So much that my 2 year old (completely potty trained) slams the lid shut before flushing the toilet.

Ever since I read that it's never been the same around here. I close the lid anyway but now I make sure because I am always thinking about the toothbushes because our bathroom is so small and you just never know. I am now teaching my daughter and she is catching on real fast :)
