Overbite question!!

my son has an overbite and the dentist says he will probably need braces in the future. His back molars are also tilted in a bit. Unfortunately i had the same issues and I got braces and headgear. He's only 3 1/2 so is there a chance he will out grow the overbite as he gets older?

Probably not.  I would recommend following the dentist's recommendations, and if you really don't agree, grab a second opinion.

My daughter had an underbite from basically the time her teeth came in until she was 3. She is almost 4 now, and her teeth straightened on their own perfectly. At the time her dentist also told us she would probably need braces to fix it when she is older. Thankfully they say she won't now. It may not work the same for an overbite, but maybe there's still hope!

 Some chance, but highly unlikely.
I also had an overbite, and a recessed bottom jaw, that made my overbite look worse. I elected to skip the headgear, and wore a pallet expander, that also trained my bottom jaw forward. I wore it for a year. I think I only wore braces for a year as well.....It was the retainer that gave me the most problems.

1 mom liked this

Start checking on him at night and see if he's a mouth breather.  If they don't breath thru their nose at night and keep their mouth closed, it allows their jaw to grow narrow and foward.  The top and bottom teeth need to be applying gentle pressure to each other for proper jaw growth.  Max was a BAD mouth breather and was starting to get a narrow jaw with overbite.  We had his adenoids removed @ 3 and now at 5.5 his jaw his bite appears to be improving.  At hte very least... its not getting any worse.

No that is something you either have or don't.  His jaw will change which is why they wait for any metal in the mouth but if they see it now they will see it later.  Sorry for the news but it's not really that bad.  At least it is fixable.

I suppose there is always a chance..or maybe it wont be that bad?  most people have a small over bite, I do..but its nothing that needs braces.

wait what?  I was trying to figure this out lol but if they dont breath through their nose and keep their mouth closed..they arent breathing..so I know thats not what you meant..what did you mean?  I am just curious because the dr said something about my youngest jaw and what not, so I was wondering if it was something I can help her fix lol
