My Baby girl was diagnosed with RSV about 6 days ago. She seems to be fighting it well but it just makes me so sad for her to hear that nasty cough. Any one have any experience with RSV in newborns this young. Is she through the worst of it or do we have more dark clouds coming our way?

My son was 1 week old when we were hospitalized. Keep a close eye on her. If breathing becomes labored or if the coughing fits leave her winded go to the ER. RSV is a reay bad cold, it goes undiagnosed in older children and adults that are otherwise healthy- it looks like a bad cold.

If she was diagnosed and not hospitalized, I would venture a guess that she isn't a bad case. Still be very cautious and do not go anywhere that is not 100% necessary as RSV is contaigous.

Thanks so much for the reply. She is a fighter and the doc says we are doing a great job caring for her I am just so scared. I have heard horror stories of children months and months older than her being hospitalized with life threatening issues from the virus.

Why were you housebound so long?

His pediatrician said said he was very open to catching other viruses. It was end of December ...so cold and flu season
He is now 9 and very healthy.

My youngest had it when he was 3-4 weeks old.  We spent his first Vanlentine's Day and that whole weekend in the hospital.  It turned in pneumonia.  It was scary to watch him struggle to breathe.  What did the Dr tell you?

My youngest stel son had rsv when he was 6 months old. We now are very careful. When its cold he's bundled up like Ralphy from the Christmas story. And we all get flu shots, he now has bad allergies and when he comes home from his mothers and grandmothers he has a horrible cough and runny nose for a few days because they smoke. Hope all turns out well.

Hey

my baby (who is 3 months old now) got it as well :( :(.  Right about 8 weeks old and it tore my heart UP!

For us, he actually went into respiratory distress, so make sure you keep a good eye on her to ensure she's breathing properly through this!  RSV is famous for causign asthma like symptoms, as well, and could last up to a year (jsut FYI).

But, for us, we just had a humidifier installed in our room (where he sleeps), and we ordered "Baby Comfynose" which is a nasal aspirator (did much better job than the bulbs they give you).  I kept him on breastmilk, but he did go through a period where he didn't eat as much :(.  We also had to give him pedialyte a few times for his refusal to drink...he liked the uncolored apple flavor the best.

The best you can do is keep an eye on his fever, his breathing, and report any changes for the wrose to your doctor immediately.  If there is any indication he's turned blue, take him to the ER immediately.  Not trying to scare you, but this is waht happend to me :(
