My son has had painfull BM in the past and now he holds his poop in. Any mom's out there that can give me any advice? Thank you.
Bump, for when I get home in a couple of hours.
have you eliminated the constipation completely?
He will let a little bit come out but he will hold the rest of it in and its hurting him. He is very cranky and he will not let me help him. So I am clueless on what to do. I have took him to the ER and they said that he is not constipated.
When he does go, is it hard or soft? Dry or moist? (I know it's gross, sorry)
The longer he holds it in, the dryer it gets, which means the harder it is, and the harder it is to go. When my DS was getting consitpated we started with apple and prune juice, eliminated bananas and milk and pushed water. Lots and lots of water. Dehydradation is the leading cause of constipation in children.
After a while we had to move to miralax. We put some in a cup of 1/2 juice 1/2 water every morning. Then we made a habit of sitting on the potty every night right after dinner.
Is he potty trained? or potty training?
We started a sticker chart. At first, every time he went he got a prize (matchbox car, or movie and popcorn w/ daddy etc....cheap)
Then every time he went he got a sticker. Every 5 stickers, he got to get a prize. (a little bigger)
The entire process took us 3 months once we started the Miralax. But first focus on making sure he's not constipated. If it really hurts everytime he goes, you're fighting an up hill battle. First conquer the constipation, then address the resulting fear.
Hope this helps!!
My 4yo holds it depending on where we are. He only goes at home and at my in-laws. I wish I had advice. try what Andrea suggested? I'm still working on it myself.
We also did a sticker chart. My oldest would hold it in until she couldn't anymore. It was so frustrating. Giving her the sticker chart really did help. Good luck!
I totally agree. The Miralax not only helps the constipation, but it works by softening the poop (pulling water into the poop to soften it). The softer the poop is, the more difficult it is to withhold. Miralax is a non-stimulant, stool-softening laxative, which is safe for long-term, daily use (stimulant laxatives are habit-forming so are for occasional use only, but stool softeners are okay for frequent use). You need to use it daily, long-term, until your son is past his pooping fears. If a full dose is too much (diarrhea), then you can cut the dose in half. If a full dose isn't doing enough, then you can increase it until your son is eliminating a sufficient quantity daily.

He's actually doing better now. He still holds it in for a day or two but around the third day he poops all normal. He pooped in the toilet two days ago and we took him out to get a toy.
