We're taking him this spring for his first evaluation. He's only 3, but his dad has horrible vision, and started wearing glasses when he was around 5.
Once a year starting at 3. Before then they can't really do much.
I am actually an Optician. I work in a private practice optometrist office and we actually do exams on kidos as young as 6 months. The exam on the 6 month old doesnt take too long because all we are really able to check at that point is whether they are tracking or not. Seeing the children this early also helps to ensure that we establish healthy vision practices as early as possible. We do recommend that children are seen first time around age 3 (if they haven't already been seen between 6 and 12 months). After 3, if there aren't any concerns we would recommend their parents bring them back in 2 years. Also, in illinois, the children have to have an eye exam upon entering the school system. Which is great, we catch so many this way that wouldn't have otherwise seen an eye doctor because unless their kid is running into walls or something, parents don't think about vision unless prompted to for some reason.
I just took my almost 6 year old in the beginning of this month for his first eye exam. He has perfect eyes so they said he didn't need to come back for 3 years. I on the other hand have lousy eye sight and need to go back every year. I have yet to take my daughter in to get her eyes checked.
every year...especially my 10 yr old who has so many vision issues. We need to stay on top of it.
