Ask your dr for a referral to an asthma specialist.  He's probably ready for preventative asthma meds.  The great thing about the allergy/asthma specialists is they will usually troubleshoot over the phone with you and change meds as necessary.

In the mean time.... is his cough wet or dry?

I agree with trying to get him to an asthma specialist.  Good luck!

If it is the pollen, his asthma is probably at least partially allergy induced.  Is he on a daily allergy med? I agree with asking about a daily preventative asthma med too.

Does he have a dr who is working with you on his asthma treatment, or are you just using the ER as necessary?  Even if its the weekend, you should have SOME dr you can call and ask how to proceed.  You need to specifically ask for an ACTION PLAN.  Its a written out paper that says:

When well - do this/take this

At the first sign of illness - give this medicine

During a flair - take this, do this, look for this

etc...

Poor kiddo.  I don't have any new advice but I hope he finds some relief soon.
