My 5 1/2 year old son is quite underweight :-(

I have a 5.5 year old son, with a 3'11'' height and a weight of 37.5 pounds only. I think according to the average BMI, he is underweight as per his height. He has an average diet, but seems he is not putting on weight according to that. Suggest me a good diet chart for him.

He has a lever issue. He once had this enlarged lever thing, when he was hospitalized for 5 days. Is that the cause behind his not gaining weight?

Does he eat a lot?  or is he a picky eater?  If he eats a lot, but isn't gaining weight I might be concerned.  If he hardly eats, you might want to feed him some healthy fats, or maybe drinks such as carnation instant breakfast with whole milk.

NEVER heard of de-worming a child?  How did you do that?  and 4 Spoons of Pediasure?  He can have the whole bottle!

His BMs are normal. Haven't contacted any Pedi since long time. He eats well for his age. I even give him pediasure twice a day (4 spoon full). He does complaint for stomach-ache frequently. I have even tried de-worming. He also has problems taking sound sleep.

FYI... when you de-worm your child please read meds. properly most of them affect the liver functions. OP you need to take your child to the doctor.

Why would you need to worm your child because he eats a lot of sweets?

Quoting miac1234:

Deworming the human parasites (hookworm, tapeworm, roundworm, etc.)by giving a prescribed medicine. He has a sweet tooth and eats loads of sweets and chocolates.

De worming ??? Wtf ??

I would first talk to his Pediatrician. If he feels he's fine, then I am sure he is. One of my friends son was about that size at that age. He was always a little guy, still is. But perfectly healthy!

I am going through the same type of thing. My 5 year old daughter on her last doctor visit isn't growing. She was in the 25 percentile. She used to be in the 90 percentile for height and 50 for weight. She won't eat though. She is so darn picky. I told the doctor this numerous times and he said kids will eat when they want to. They wont starve themselves to death. He did run some blood work on her to make sure it wasn't her liver or thyroid. That all came back fine. I do think it's because she doesn't eat that much. He is going to see her back n 6 months. She is 36 lbs. Her sister who is almost exactly two years younger is 33 lbs.

I hope you figure it out and good luck to you! :)

Liver stuff is scary because you dont want to introduce anything with a lot of fat in it because it could damage the liver.
