Kids' Health Kids' Health
DS(5) has always been hyper and emotional, but not alarmingly so. Every now and then, we have an epic meltdown for no reason, but not very often. I mentioned it to the pedi and he was not concerned.

He has a cold, so the pharmacist recommended mucinex cold for kids. I gave it to him this morning and he became wired all afternoon. 5 hours later I repeated the dose (5MLs) before bed, although it said every 4. This time he went crazy hyper, laughing, crying, bouncing off walls, floors, whatever. It took 2 hours to calm him down. I checked the label and there were several dyes including yellow 5 and red 40.

So I have heard things about red dye causing issues like this...but I have also read where people have refuted it. Thoughts? Experiences?

Wow, interesting!

Quoting MarciaD:

You can see why Red 40 gets most of the blame. This is the # of lbs the FDA certifited in 2009:

Blue 1        711,659
Blue 2        550,883
Red 2             1,764
Green 3         15,817
Red 40:     6,205,374
Yellow 5    3,756.551
Yellow 6    3,558,351
