I've been trying really hard to drop a few pounds (20-25). I lift weights 45 mins to an hour 5 days a week and do 4 miles on the elliptical 5 days a week. I have noticed I am a lot more toned but no weight loss. Yes, I have changed my eating habits as well and am consuming plenty of water. Is lifting weights the problem? I know muscle weighs more than fat but should I stop lifting until the pounds of fat are gone THEN tone up? Confused????

  • Are you keeping track of your body measurements?  Maybe you are losing inches b/c you are building muscle, but you aren't seeing the numbers on the scale...

Don't stop the weights!  Having good muscle tone makes you look youthful.

  • keep lifting. lifting is crucial. you burn more cals. It took me months to drop any weight. But I finally lost 50lbs and weight training helped do it.

  • Try to do some walking, that would help too, you can do it 5 or 6 days a week for 30 min , and work your way to an 1 hour.

  • Hello -

Do not worry, I completely understand your frustration. With lifting weights your body will change and redistribute its weight. You may gain weight (because muscle weighs more than fat), but you will likely lose inches and tone up. For example, my mom started lifting light weights in addition to cardio and she never lost any weight but she dropped 2 dress sizes and looks transformed!

The key is to include cardio, it is what will shed the extra weight/fat and blast calories - the strength training will help you tone up and speed up your metabolism.

I actually have a fitness blog that has some great example workouts for losing weight and breaking through those plateuas and trouble zones. Let me know if this is helpful.
