the month of November wasnt good to me. i was at a plateau all month..i would lose like .4 pounds, then gain it back..staying within the same 1 pound loss/gain the whole time. so of course with the holidays this week i indulged a bit. i drank alot of alchohol, i ate alot of food, i had a good time tho lol. so i weigh in this morning and i lost 3 pounds this week! how? i was dreading weighing in because i was SURE i would have gained..i couldnt believe it! ive only got 12 pounds to go until i reach my goal which will be 61 pounds lost. my mom said sometimes your body just needs that *shock* of calories to get out of the plateau.

anyone else have something like this happen?

My weigh in is tomorrow and although I was careful over the Thanksgiving holiday, I'm afraid this weeks weigh in is going to be a disappointment. I have had a couple weeks where I either didn't lose anything or had regained a pound or two, but I simply changed up my activities or my eating schedule.

I believe that which does not kill us makes us stronger.

The body needs calories to burn calories. A plateau in weight loss is usually caused by not getting enough calories.

Your mom is right - the extra calories wake up the metabolism.

This is what I was going to say..  I know a few people in my life (sister, a friend), who eat too little and can't figure out why they don't lose weight.  My sister cleans house for a living, and dang, she NEEDS and deserves a good breakfast, but eats just a half of a pb sandwich (just a smear of pb) and some coffee!  Not enough..

You don't lose weight by consuming fewer calories, you lose by burning calories. Several studies have shown that muscle is what burns fat cells, nothing else just muscle. Your body needs calories to fuel that muscle and therefore fueling you weightloss! :) I didn't just make this up, my old trainer and my doctor told me this so I looked up a couple of studies. It makes sense if you really think about it. Good Luck and keep up the good work! ;)

i actually eat alot of calories. usually 16-1800 a day. this was my first plateau, but also my first week losing that much. i usually lose 1-2 pounds a week.

I didn't have much of an appetite last week thats probably part of why I didn't lose any weight, at least I am doing better so far this week. And I just brought our new puppy home tonight so I will have someone extra to chase after and I lot of extra cleaning so yay for the extra workout lol

I've read that plateaus are caused when your metabolism gets stagnant and to break them confuse your metabolism by eating different amounts of calories everyday. Bump it up or down by 50 - 150 cal instead of staying at the same number.

i think it's because you decided not to stress over it and just give yourself a little break. your body responded. now if you decided to give yourself too long a break, then you would have definitely gained!

This is what I believe.  Also, beenznrice has a good point as well.

Of course, I think we all know that physical activity is going to burn more calories, but sometimes our bodies need that little "shock" of confusion or at least not set on expecting a consistent amount of calorie/fat/carb intake.
