Hi ladies! I'm Stephanie & I'm a SAHM of our 3 1/2 year old son. My husband and I started changing our eating & exercise habits in December of last year...well, technically my husband started in November of 2010 when he was hospitalized for high blood pressure. He's down over 40lbs, I'm down 15lbs since Christmas...but now I think I'm stuck!! It's makin me crazy!! I'm up 2 ounces, then down 2 ounces! It's a battle I've had this entire past week & I began walking the treadmill a little longer thinking that might shake things up, apparently not. I typically am on the treadmill for about 20-30 minutes & so I bumped it to an hour thinking that would help. Maybe it will but maybe I have I do longer than a few days?? I dunno. My inches around my waist are substantially decreasing and definitely around my chest, but I have a weight loss goal & am working so hard to meet it! I have an app on my iPod that I enter my food calories & exercises in, but I never hit my calorie max for the day, and some days I don't even hit my goal nutritional values, so I thought maybe that's a good thing...but maybe not??? Any help or advise anyone can give me would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks so much!

I have lots and lots and lots and lots of weeks where I don't lose anything, or i even gain a lb.  But on average, I've lost 1.2 lbs per week over the past year.  I usually only start to consider it a plateau if it's been 3+ weeks with slow or no loss.  (LIKE NOW GRRRR)

It can be really hard to be patient but we carry around so much water in our bodies, that it's easy to have a lb of water weight mess with our minds.

good luck! sounds like you're doing great :)

Congratulations on the life style choices you and your husbnad have made to your health!  You are setting excellent examples for your son!

The scale is not the only way to tell if you are making changes ..... you say you are losing inches around your waist which is AWESOME!!!!  This means you are losing FAT!!!

Please remember that 5 pounds of fat = 5 pounds of muscle ..... however, the muscle is mroe dense and therefore takes up less space.  So as you lose inches you are losing FAT!!

A saw a picture of 3 grapefruit = 5 pounds of fat and 3 tangerines = 5 pounds of muscle ..... I know which one I would want to have ..... 3 tangerines!

Also, you are doing cardio but have you throught about strength training?  I know for me it helps build muscle which in turn burns more calories at rest!

Your body might just be hanging on for a week.  BUT, if you aren't meeting your calorie needs for the day that can definitely stall weight loss.  One of the biggest reasons people fail in losing weight is not eating enough.  You have to fuel your body and get your metabolism to work for you, not against you.  If you aren't eating enough, it's going to hang onto what it is getting.  Good luck!  Also try switching up your workout.  Try some squats, lunges and weights.

You need to start reaching your daily calorie intake. You body can go into starvation mode and hold on to everything.
Also add some strengh training in your workout routine

How's your water intake?

Great job on you loss so far and inches !!

Natural shake that a doctor made?  Doesn't sound very healthy to me.

This! Have you had your BMR done so you know how many calories you should be eating? Then tracking your food so you know what you are eating. Eating enough is key, without enough calories (good ones of course), you won't lose weight.

I've heard of hitting plateaus.  That's what I'm afraid of, I'm starting my journey.  One of my good friends have been losing lots of weight for two years now and she thought she hit a plateau.  She went to a specialty clinic to see if there was anything else she could do or if something else is wrong.  She found out that she has a goiter enlarged irregular multinodular thyroid, which may or may not be cancerous.  It's really scary.  She was trying really hard to knock some more pounds off and she found out why she can't.  If you've tried everything and nothing is working, get a check up and make sure it isn't health related.  Good luck!

Thanks! I finally contacted a nutritionist & was given some interesting information. Outside of the obvious lack of calories (I wa taking in about 900 calories but would exercise burning upwards of 300 calories, so my intake was nothing!!) but added to this problem, I'm definitely not taking in the amount of water I should be. My dr said there are no problems (I had bloodwork done about a month ago), and she told me to increase my water as well). It's really hard, but the last few days I've been taking in about 1400 calories & exercise off about 300 so now (hopefully) after a few weeks of doing this (and increasing my water) I should be able to break my plateau.
