The joint itself doesn't have muscles, of course, but by strengthening your quad, you can do a lot. Squats and stair climbing can be good. Leg extensions, if they don't hurt you, are good, same for lunges. If any move hurts, STOP.
Straight leg raises, with your foot pointed out a a 45 degree angle, are good for strengthening your inner quad muscle (vastus medialis, I believe), which is good for keeping your patella in place.

Biking is good low impact. I have bad knees and biking does good things for them. My dh had his meniscus repaired and did biking as physical therapy for it

Biking kills me knee. I live to do it. Makes me feel good to bike, but my knee hurts so bad the night after I do it that I can't sleep.

I did some squats yesterday, as well as some lunges. They will be becoming part of my cardio workout. Thanks!

Are you stretching after? It hurt like hell when I first started but got better over time. Ice and anti-inflammatories are good too. Walking is good but jogging/running is higher impact.
