Weight Loss, Fitness & Health Weight Loss, Fitness & Health

I know we have a lot of new ladies in the group, so I thought I'd pose this query.

Do YOU have an attainable goal for your body?

By this, I mean...are you trying to lose too much weight, too fast? Have you analyzed how much weight is normal for your body type, how much you want to lose, the time frame you have set, etc?

Keep in mind that the weight that is lost on The Biggest Loser is not normal. The contestants have all of their meals provided for them AND they are in the gym for 6 hours per day while on the ranch. That is not feasible for the majority of people. It is not realistic to expect to lose 20 lbs in a month. It IS realistic to expect a 5 lb loss in a month however.

So, is your goal realistic? If not, how can you alter your plan?

Great post! It's taken me 10 months to lose 38lbs but my body has still been changing even with my weight loss slowing down as I near a healthy weight for me. It's a slow long process if you do it the healthy way ;)

You are sooo right! It is a slow long process when done the healthy way! There is no reason to expect it to fall off in a matter of days or weeks. It takes time to build a healthy lifestyle and is worth the extra time. :-)

Slow and steady wins the race! I want to be able to keep the weight of once it's all gone. I know it may take awhile, but that's okay as long as I'm doing it right.

Yes ma'am!! Slow and steady is the best! Maintaining is key...if you do it fast and use unhealthy methods, it will be harder to maintain as you have learned nothing in the journey. You are so right!

I have a weight goal not a time frame to reach it. If it takes me 6 months that's okay, if it takes me a year that's okay too. My goal is to be proactive and steady with healthy eating and exercise. If I fall off the wagon there is no such thing as "well there's always tomorrow" Nope, I pick myself up, dust myself off and realize where and how I failed careful not to repeat those actions.

I learned yesterday to ALWAYS carry healthy snack with me whenever I leave home. We went to the inlaws for what we were told was to have been a late 1:00 lunch, we didn't end up eating until 6! No veggie tray, no cheese, NOTHING. O_O I was starving and ate more than I should have way too fast.

Whoo hoo!!! This is an awesome attitude!

I love this post. I thnk that it is best to lose steadily rather than quickly.

I really think my goals are realistic and attainable. Lose 10 lbs and tone up in 3 months.

You can definitely lose 10 lbs in 3 months...toning might take a little more time, unless you start lifting heavy weights, then it will happen faster. You can do it!

I tell people to set small goals, such as losing 5 pounds. Anyone can lose five pounds right? Once you lose five pounds, set a goal to lose another five pounds and so forth. You get discouraged too easily if you set a really high goal and then the weight doesn't come off as fast as you think it should.

Exactly! If you set small goals, you will succeed as you will see progress and stay motivated.

while the show is good in promoting weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, people forget that they have everything (except the workout) done for them and the timelines are compressed which is not attainable for nearly everyone!

when i first started, i had 3 goals:  fit into my size 4 jeans, lose my muffin top and get my muscle definition back.  i never put a timeline on myself nor did i weigh myself.  the lack of a timeline took the pressure off me (racing against the clock tends to give you a panicky/overwhelming feeling and i dont like that!)  and i liberated myself from the scale because that thing is an inaccurate asshole!  it always tells you a number that you hate and it's inaccurate to begin with!! so i decided that measurements are the way to go and i didn't obsess over it -- i took them once a month knowing that seeing results once a month is more likely than seeing results once a week.

Exactly right! That is why I asked the question... every time TBL comes on, a lot of people start thinking it is a good idea to get healthy... on the flip side, they think it is going to happen the same way for them. Weight loss is not a fast process. It is unrealistic to think you can lose 20 lbs in a week like a contestant did on the premiere...they have everything done for them and spend 6+ hours in the gym. I don't know about you, but I can get at least 2-3 hours on a good day while the kids are in school, but not 6 hours. I have other pressing matters to deal with.

You are a great example of how it works and works well! You've done a great job!

I'd like to lose 40 pounds in 6 months or so. No hurry. Just good healthy life changes. Nothing dramatic.

Good for you!! Healthy life changes is key! Great attitude!

I was just talking to DH about this last night.  Since the beginning my goals have been so far fetched, it's no wonder I'm STILL trying to get to my goal.  I think I really need to take my own advice and slow my happy ass down and realize that when I was losing slow and steady I was the happiest and most encouraged.  It's when I tried to hurry up and rush the process that I have become super discouraged and gained weight instead of lost it.

Sometimes introspection helps. You can do it Tasha!!!
