I know I make a post to whine about my hips about every 3 weeks so here goes....  ;)

I can't decide if I should or shouldn't quit doing X or Y or Z exercises that I love or if my hips will bother me no matter what!  grrrrr.  I'm going to talk to my chiro about it again Monday but he basically thinks that the greatest exercise on earth for everyone is walking.  I do like walking but I also like lifting, squating, lunging, jogging, jumping.

I *know* jogging is the worst for my hips. & jumping.  so I won't do that.  But I still can't tell if heavy squats are ok or not. Or of even bodyweight squats and lunges are ok.  My hips seemed to be doing much better there for a little while and then I was back to square 1 again about a month ago and I don't really know what I did.

Someone suggested I see an orthopedic specialist and see what they say.  The chiro says my hips are 100% healthy but the joints are not stable and slip out all the time.  I do NOT want to do any damage that's for sure!

I just wish there was an easy way to know what might hurt me and what I can do without much risk.

end vent!

1 mom liked this
Have you tried the elliptical? That's pretty low impact and quite a work out.

Oh yea, I do cardio machines 4 days per week and they are really easy on my hips and great at burning cals!  I just love strength training more than cardio.  :)  Squatting is my favorite lift but I quit that a few weeks ago but I might go back to it... I just don't want to risk injury though.  And I am grateful that I'm able to do that because I know some people are even more restricted with their workouts.

Oh I understand now! I know the feeling. I have very flat feet and have always had weak ankles, so it's low impact for me. Even walking too long can make my feet cramp up.

That sounds so frustrating too.  I like to take my kids for long walks but I realized pulling the wagon is one thing that tends to really make my hips get wonky!  But walking without the wagon seems ok and before long the kids will be old enough to be able to walk alongside me... well 1 alreayd is.... the other probably needs another year or 2 lol.

There are a few things I would suggest.  Keep in mind orthopedics is what I do :)

1. See if they can do a dynamic ultrasound of your hips.  That way you can move (squat bend, etc) and they can see on video exactly the movements your hip joints are making.  Knowing that, you might be able to better tell exactly what exercises you can do.

2. If #1 isn't an option, at least try an x-ray (will look at the bones) or MRI (will look at the tissue/muscle) and it would at least give you a general idea.  There might be some inflammation in the joints or fluid and that would be an easy fix.

Oh yeah. Hip pain is nothing to play with either.
