New Year Weight Loss Challenge Day 25: Avoiding Belly Fat

Welcome to Day 25 of the New Year Weight Loss Challenge

Avoiding Belly Fat

One of the most common questions in weight loss, is how to get rid of the belly. The answers is through proper diet and exercise.
The one thing to understand is that not all body fat is the same. Meaning that where you carry fat matters. If you carry weight around your abdomen, the health risks are greater than carrying weight in the hips and thighs area. Belly fat is stored deep under the surface and surrounds the liver and abdominal organs. This stored fat is linked to a higer risk of diabetes and insulin resistance.
The best way to avoid dangerous fat around the belly is to cut out or cut back on food and drinks containing calories from fructose such as energy drinks, sodas, sports drinks and coffee drinks. Processed foods like doughnuts, cereal, candy and muffins also fall into that catergory. Cutting out sugary food and drinks will lead to a slimmer waistline and healthier you.
If you are craving something sweet, reach for a piece of fruit instead.
Lightly flavoring your water is a great way to quench your thirst without all the added calories and fructose
. For ideas on flavoring your water, click here.

How often do you get a 'sweet tooth' craving? How do you combat it?
Have you cut out or cut back on sugary food and drinks?
If so, what have you replaced them with?
Do you keep fresh fruit on hand?

I drink Crystal Light & only have sweetened chai once in a very blue moon.

I allow myself a Weight Watchers ice cream once a day, but otherwise have lots of fruit & veggies when cravings kick in.

I have developed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, so I know exactly what you mean about belly fat! This is why my weight loss is so critical. I've lost over 53lb of the 100 I need to lose to be healthy.

I keep all kinds of fruit in my house. I went a sweet tooth now and then but use to have a super bad sweet tooth. I cut out sweets completely for the most part. I use to be a big coke a cola drinker and now only drink water mostly and tea or coffee now and then.

I'm not a big sweets person... I did cut out putting sugar in my coffee a while back, now it's cream only!

We have fresh fruit on hand and I also keep sugar free hello and pudding as well as 100 calories packs of cookies. I crave sweets a lot and sometimes fruit doesn't cut it. If I don't let myself give in and have something small, I will end up binging. I'm trying to cut out as many carbs as I can though, and maybe that will help with the cravings. Aldo, sometimes chewing on a piece of gum helps.

I do have sweet tooth but I try to wait to splurge on the weekend and be real good during the week. We do keep fruits around the house and I am pretty active!

I have more salty cravings than sweet ones.  I have some dark chocolate  in the fridge, if I really want something though.   My family loves fruit. We have a cut up fresh fruit salad with dinner 4 or 5 times a week and plenty of whole pieces around to snack on.

I don't really eat to much candy or drink soda. And when I do have sweets I just practice portion control.
