Are there things people swear by that just don't work for you? Or unusual things that work for you??

I tried high protein/low carb and I gained weight the whole time.
The harder I workout, I seem to gain.
I lost my first 25 pounds while eating a potato almost every day. And a banana, gasp!
Counting points does not work for me. Sitting on my butt all day at work doesn't help me either.
