Yep....I said it.. I'm almost speechless and if you have been in the group for a while, you know this doesn't happen frequently.
Why I am speechless: A friend of mine had never run a half marathon, so I told her I would run an upcoming half with her. So, we started training the first week of school, which was the first week of August. In the 2nd week, Leigh Ann injured herself and tried to wait it out. Her husband works in an Orthopedic office ( can't remember his title, but he is like a PA) and made her an appt. She went and was immediately grounded. She was put on meds and ordered to do PT. Then, I managed to injure myself somehow. I ran 7 miles and was fine...a few days later, during my 5 miler, my legs bonked hard. I went to the Ortho( we go to the same one). I was put on Medrol, told not to run for 6 days and to carry on as it was Sciatica and IT band inflammation. Crap..so, I was a good girl ( for once) and listened. I felt okay after that 6 days, so I ran my miles- 3,4,3,8...no problems.. took a couple of days off, ran 5 and hit the wall..I called my Ortho back. The PA ordered an MRI of my lower back and I had it done last Wednesday. So, I went back to the Ortho yesterday for the results.
It is not good even though I was hoping for good news. Evidently, I have Facet Arthropathy in L2 through L4, and bulging discs in L4-L5. Those coupled together are causing my hamstrings to seize up when I walk or run, my IT bands to inflame, my Sciatic nerve to be pinched, and my SI joint is jacked up as well. The FA causes degenerative Osteoporosis and the bulging discs cause some major issues as well.
I have been referred to a specialist in the same office for a consultation for injections into my back, and possible back surgery in the future. I also have to go to PT. Susie told me " I won't tell you that you will never run again, but I will tell you that you will never run pain free again." Honestly, I wanted to cry...my PA has the same thing, but she said hers is not as severe as mine is...she said she still runs, but she can't go more than about 6 miles before intense pain sets in...I'm still reeling from this diagnosis..
Running keeps me sane..I've been down for a month at least and I'm feeling the itch..I need to run and my body ( and doctors) won't let me right now... I can't pull weights or do anything until I start PT on Friday. Ugh...
