Technology in Early Childhood Programs:

software-a set of instructions used to direct a computer to perform some acivity

hardware-the physical components of the computer system, such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer

Purposes and Objectives:

Select programs that present age-appropriate concepts, such as problem solving, making choices, predicting outcomes, creatitivy development, asking open-ended questions, and reading, writing, and langauge skill development

give preference to the software that includes both printed instructions and graphic choices tha tmake options clear to children. If you have a CD-ROM drive, teh chlidren can recieve these instructions verbally. Touch pads and touch screens also offer opportunities to support children.

Make choices that allow one child to work independently or work as a partner with another child.

The chlidren should be able to use the software as a process.

Look closely at which programs offer opportunities for the children to develop paitence while completing a task and incorporate an explatory mode-meaning that a child can stop any activity and move on to the next at any time, thereby setting his own pace.

Look closely at at the software packages to be sure that you have the necesary equipment, computer memory, and mateirals to use the program.

Note: Select only those programs that you have screened, tested, and personally used prior to purchase. new ones are being prodcued every day.
