Action Needed:
Vaccine Exemptions
 Under Attack in Colorado

The following is a brief summary of an important message from the National Vaccine Information Center.

A group of non-elected, unaccountable individuals participating in a workgroup hosted by the Colorado Immunization Program wants to make it harder for you to exempt from vaccines in the State of Colorado.

This group plans to change the exemption form that Colorado parents have always used to exempt their children from one or more of the vaccines required for school. These are the three major changes that are planned.

1. The new form will require parents to get a signature from a medical professional who practices traditional medicine. This completely disregards the fact that many Colorado families use alternative medicine and have personal reasons to exempt from vaccines.

2. The new form requires a parent's religious exemption to be signed by a "religious leader." However, requiring a "religious leader" to approve a personally held religious belief is a violation of religious freedom as protected by the US Constitution.

3. The new exemption form will make parents have to exempt from even more vaccines, including vaccines that are simply recommended, like the HPV vaccine and flu vaccine. The form also states that parents will be asked to review this document again when their child is 4, 6 and 12-15 months of age, then again at 4 years old and again at 11-12 years old; also, the form is now two pages long. This is medical harassment and a violation of your constitutional rights.

What's more, this Colorado Immunization Program group won't consider this to be a rule change worthy of the appropriate public hearings and notification. They are working to significantly change a long-standing Colorado State Law without even going through the process required for a rule change, let alone the legislative process.
