Do you ever take your child to the ER for nonemergency reasons

Posted by   + Show Post

such as an ear ache, stomach ache or things like that? I am just asking because I have noticed that there are several people that I know in real life that do and I have to be honest, it really bugs me. If their kid was running a high temp and super sick, I could understand it, but once they took their kid because they had a cold, nothing more. Tonight their child has an ear ache and they took her for no other reason than that. The reason that it bugs me is because I feel that these people use the ER for their personal doctor office when their are true emergencies out there that the staff are needed for. If you go to the ER here before 11:00 there is something called fast track, kind of like a quick care clinic, but these people always wait until it is too late to go. I just don't see the point in using the ER for such nonemergent reasons. If you do this, can you explain to me why so I might be able to understand because I truly don't get it.

Sorry, I just had to get that out.

I am jealous of this! I really wish Children's Healthcare would open up a clinic up here for stuff like this. My doctor has told me that we need to start taking our kids to the ER there  although it is almost an hour away- they have only pediatricians on staff and specialist in their ER and will do diagnosing in the ER and not just find the quick solution. My middle son had a temp of 104.5 on night, was vomiting and extremely sick, the er here sent him through the fast track clinic, had a physician's assistant see him and gave him a shot of antibiotics- he was already on oral antibiotics for the previous 48 hours for strep throat. His pediatrician was furious when I called her office the next morning. If it wouldn't have been 1:00AM and my husband wouldn't have been on night shift we would have been making the trip to Atlanta. We never found out what was exactly wrong with him.

Let me add, we now have a pediatric after hours clinic! It rocks for those late night needs for a dr or weekend visits.  They can even handle tummy viruses that are causing dehydration I believe, whis is the other reason I have taken my child to an ER in the past. If my child has been sick with a tummy virus, is keeping, nothing down and showing signs of dehydration, you can't wait. This past Saturday I was able to get my dd in for a Saturday visit with her dr at a satelite office, and they gave her a shot to stop the vomiting since it was severe and we had no ER visit.  Yay so much money saved.

Absolutely not. The ER is for emergencies not for everyone's convienence.
