** END OF TRANSCRIPT **

Authorities tell WDRB News that both the boy and his sister are now staying with an aunt. The girl is expected to recover. Police are still awaiting the results of a toxicology report on Combs.

Police are calling it an attempted murder suicide. According to Jeffersonville Police detectives, 35-year-old Melissa Combs shot her daughter in the head while she was sleeping and then walked into another room and took her own life.

"That's crazy because we talk to...I talked to her at about 2:30 [Wednesday] yesterday in the evening and to wake up to hear this, that's crazy," says George Cannon, who is a neighbor.

Cannon and his wife say Combs didn't seem upset or worried when they spoke to her on Wednesday. "She looked normal yesterday, she didn't look like anything was wrong," says Shelly Cannon.

The Cannons are now wondering if the shooting had anything to do with the last conversation they had with Combs.

"Yesterday, I was talking to her about getting a job where I work at...and she said she was going to come back over and talk to me and she never did," says Shelly Cannon.

Police were called to the home Thursday morning.

"Our office received a call just before 6 a-m on a report of gunshots fired in an apartment," says Det. Todd Hollis, Jeffersonville Police.

Police say Combs' 10 year old son was also inside the home but wasn't injured. "He heard the gunshots and he was the one who called us to the scene. This is always especially tragic when you have a child that is that is injured from a gunshot wound."

It may be tragic, but police say it is also a miracle that the 8 year old is alive and talking.

"It is nothing short of miraculous that she was able to speak with officers and she didn't even know at the time that she had been shot," says Hollis.

Combs was pronounced dead at the scene.

Right now, police still don't know for sure what led to the shooting, however, they're talking to family and friends and believe the may have been some mental health issues involved.

Gosh I was thinking the same thing! I don't know what would or could ever come over a mother to try and kill her kid and take her own life! Just the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach and teary eyed!
