How Safe Is Your Neighborhood? Find Out What's Going On With Crime Maps

By The Safety Mom

How much do you really know about your neighborhood when you move in? Sure, the realtor gives you the wonderful statistics about how great the school system is, the easy commute and the nearby activities. But do they share with you information regarding assaults, robbery or sexual predators who live in the vicinity?

I've learned that if you want to know about something, and it's important, you had better do the research yourself and not rely on a third party. Before moving anywhere, view the free crime map reports on this site. You'll be able to view your neighborhood using several criteria.

I have to say, I felt much better about my community after having searched my neighborhood. But then I took it a step further and started viewing the neighborhoods of several of my older relatives or friends with small children. I was horrified to find out in my elderly aunt's community there were several registered sex offenders within a 10-mile radius!

This has, however, allowed me the opportunity to have a conversation with her regarding her perosnal and home security. As she lives alone, I worry about her safety and what would happen if she was injured in her homCrime Maps Neighborhood Safetye. Unfortunately, she is one of these people that assume she'll live forever and nothing will happen to her. So far, she's right. But, by viewing the crime map with her I was able to review with her safety measures that she should have in place.

I would encourage everyone to check out their neighborhood and those of family and friends.

The scores to the right indicate the relative risk of crime at the

address/site listed as compared to national averages. A Crime

Index score of 256 means that the risk of crime at the location

is 2.56 times that of the national average.

The scores are the weighted average of the areas around your

location. Blue areas are areas where crime is least likely to

occur; in Orange areas, opportunity for crime is high. The Crime

Index scores may assist you in better understanding your

relative risk of crime while determining your security needs.

Mine is a 155, but oddly enough, I have lived here 4 years and not had a single issue with crime.

Thanks for the tip but I already know my city is 4th on the FBI's most dangerous cities.
