Can you join with dependents?

Hi ladies! DH is looking to join the military and is waffling between the Army and AF at the moment (he's actually at MEPS for his physical right now!).  I'm leaning toward AF, but I read somewhere on Yahoo Answers that they aren't letting people with more than two dependends in.  Does anyone know if that is true?

Technically speaking he doesn't have any dependents right now.  He and I are not legally married yet and his name isn't on our two boys birth certificates (NOT our choice, that was the silly state we live in). If he decides to go with the AF would it be best to have him enlist and then get married just before he ships out to basic?  Would he get BAH for us while he was there if so?

Anything anyone could tell me would be greatly appreciated!

  • Are the children his? It's not impossible but it'll take waivers  The better you look on paper and score on the ASVAB the better his chances will be. If the kids are not his and your not married then there should be no problems.

  • The children are his, he's just not on their certificates because our state only allows married fathers to be named.  Legally speaking, I would be the one with full custody of the kids if it came right down to it.  He did very well on the ASVAB, he scored well above average on everything but mechanics.

  • My husband joined no problem... his dependants were me and our son. And... if you are married when he joins, you start receiving all the benefits the day he leaves for basic. it's awesome!! I went to the closes Army base when my husband left and got my military ID so I could start getting discounts, etc. I am VERY partial to the AF, not only because that's the branch my husband is in, but because I know a lot of Army wives and the Army is MUCH harder! Army deploys longer and more often than the AF.

  • You may have already found out the answer to this by now, but we have 2 kids and my husband was able to join with a waiver.  If you don't get married before he leaves he won't have a problem joining but you also won't recieve any of the benefits.  He will get BAH while he is gone, and also seperation pay after he is gone for 30 days if you are married.

  • Thanks for all the help ladies :)  As it happens, we decided to go Army instead.  DH is "too old" for the AF...never thought we'd hear "too old" in our 30's, LOL!

I really do appreciate all the replies though :)

Yep, have to be under 28 I think for AF.  Good luck in the Army!
