My daughter, who just turned 18 last month, left for BMT this past Tuesday. It has been her dream since she was 10 years old to serve in the military...she was very moved by 9/11...and the irony is, her graduation date is 9/11. Thats incredible!

The mommy in me is suffering...not knowing what she's going through, wondering how she is handling such a huge change in environment and daily life....all the "what ifs"... it's so much harder than I'd prepared myself for!!! And then I feel selfish because I can only imagine how many emotions SHE must be feeling...my worries seems so insignificant!

I would love to hear from any Air Force Moms with daughters with words of encouragement from having been through this.... any of you out there?

Hi there,

I don't have a daughter, but I have a son who graduated from Lackland in June. He celebrated his 19th birthday during basic training. Hang in there, your daughter will be fine. If this is what she wants, she will do very well. If you would like to know what she is going through, there is a very good site at www.military.about.com. It tells all about basic training and has a message board for parents. It was a great help to us when our son was in basic bacause phone calls were so short, and he would talk abot things we had no idea what they were. We were able to look them up at this site and understand what he was talking about.

Remember to write to your daughter as often as you can. It will help keep her spirits up and give her a short break during the day to read your letter. She will appreciate it very much. And DON'T send her anything but letters. She will get in trouble.

Good luck to you and your daughter. You will not believe how much she will have changed when you see her at graduation. You will be so proud!

Lisa
