so dd was born jan 19th she was on similac advanced in the hospital and for about a week at home then she got constipated and we switched to a gentle formula (gentle ease) with that she was going to the bathroom but we noticed a change in behavior (crying fussy generally uncomfortable wheezing coughing and started refusing bottles) so her pedi recommended soy. so we rushed out and got enfamil soy. not even half way thru her bottle she broke out into hives and started coughing so i brokedown and told myself im just not giving her that b/c her reaction was horrible. we went to similac sensitive which she is one now and has been for awhile she loved it at first but the constipation came back and she wasnt going at all unless we gave her a suppository (which her pedi also said to do) she still isnt going without them. she is fussy and screams non stop in pain all day. she coughs and is now starting to refuse bottles. she cries in between feedings pumps her arms and legs. she seems fine one minute and the next she screams bloody murder. the only time she isn't screaming is when she is sleeping. its obvious she just isnt happy at all. i dont know what else to do for her. the pedi recommended karo syrup in every bottle to get her regulated again so we tried that and with one bottle it made her tummy pains worse. gripe water and gas drops do nothing. herfather and i are at our breaking point we just want a happy content baby. we are making an appointment tomorrow.
I don't know much about formula for infants, but I do know that it is common for babies to get constipated on it. My guess would be that it's the formula itself and not they type of formula you use. So with that, I'd either continue using a suppository like you have been, or try one/all of the other recommendations given. My daughter was gassy (never constipated) and Mylicon drops and bicycle legs worked well for her - as well as burping her every few ounces to reduce gas bubbles in the belly. I've heard warm baths work, and I've heard that using a rectal thermometer works too - because it gets baby to use the muscles necessary for pushing the poop out. And if all else fails, I agree with 625Patty about looking into donated breastmilk.
Good luck, momma. I hope baby feels better soon.
