Yeah the fact that once the IUD is in, it works for several years and I don't have to worry about having insurance to refill my prescription on a monthly basis is something I like too.  I also like not having to remember to take a pill everyday.

I'm still breastfeeding Lynzie but my OB says Mirena shouldn't effect my milk supply especially since I've bee breastfeeding so long and have a well established milk supply.  I'm just torn between the two forms of IUDs right now and I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible.  I love the idea of non hormonal birth control, but like I said the heavy period thing freaks me out.  Anyway, thanks for the input  :)

I'm looking into getting either Para Guard or the Mirena IUD.  I was originally leaning toward Para Guard since it's non hormonal but the longer heavier periods kinda turned me off.  Are your periods really bad since being on it?  I would way rather be on something non hormonal but I really hate my period as is, and I'm not sure I want to deal with it being any longer or heavier.

I have the non-hormonal IUD called Para Guard. I'm breastfeeding so I didnt want any hormones because they can compromise your supply. That was my only option. I'm doing really well on it.

My periods are kind of crazy right now because they just started back up. With breastfeeding your periods can be really weird. I only had my first 2 since having the baby 5 months ago. My OB told me the first few periods are gonna be awful since having the baby. So far the 2 that I had were really painful & very heavy. I'm not sure if that is because they were my first periods since having the baby or if it's from ParaGuard. I was told that with ParaGuard your periods can be really heavy. When I'm done breastfeeding I'm gonna see how my periods are & if they are still painful & heavy I'm gonna have the ParaGuard removed & replaced with Mirena or go back on the pill. I liked being on the pill, the hormones caused my period to be very light & short. The only reason I would personally go with Mirena in the future is because I don't work right now & who knows if I'll have medical insurance in the future. I like how with the IUD it's in & done, you dont have to worry about re-filling it every month.

As far as breastfeeding, everyone responds differently to the hormones. Some people dont have a problem with it & some do. I read somewhere once to try the mini-pill before getting Mirena done because the hormone levels are the same & if you notice a difference with the mini pill you can just stop it where its a pain in the butt to have Mirena taken out if you notice a dip in your supply. A friend of mine used Mirena while breastfeeding & it depleted her supply but like I said everyone is different. The other thing I like about ParaGuard is it's good for 10 years, I think Mirena is good for 5. I feel like I can deal with the heavy periods but not the cramps. I'm hoping they get better over time.

I WAS on ortho-tri-cyclen [well, the generic-Tri-Sprintec] UNTIL I found out I am over 14wks. pregnant!! Buyer beware lol. Thankfully, everything is fine with the baby so far :) After this one, I am either getting my tubes tied or hubby will get snipped. Not taking any more chances! We already have an 18month old.

I'm not on any forn right now. TTC actually :)

Before DS when I used birth control it was always the pill. Worked great for me seeing as how I didnt get pregnant until I was 30 and that was within a couple of months of going off the pill. Was on Ortho Tri Cyclen when I was younger and then Jolivette most recently. My SIL has an IUD (Mirena) and is very happy with that. She had it put in after her second daughter and hasn't had to think about BC in the 5 years since. I think it needs replacing now because it's effective for five years but I don't really keep up with her BC schedule LOL.
