Do you or don't you garden?
What has been your experience with it?
Do you feel it saves you money or not, and why?
I have wanted to get started the last 3 years, but I can never get my DH to help me out. This year is a complete bust because we'll be moving (hopefully) in the next 2-3 months. So there was no reason to put the money into getting started. Next year, though, I WILL HAVE A GARDEN! If I have to do it all myself.
I've been a gardener for 34 years (yes, I'm THAT old! LOL)
My first garden, I sold the produce. Made over $125 that summer. Not bad for a 12 yr old back in the 70's! I helped my mom with canning and freezing from their garden.
When I became an adult, I kept on with gardening and preserving.
About 10 years ago, my DH (a city boy) asked if gardening was really that much of a money-saver. After totaling up the canned goods and then comparing them to what it would cost me in the store, then subtracting seed and fertilizer and canning costs, I figured it saved me around $800.
By today's standards, with what I plan to grow this year, subtracting costs for heirloom seeds (and I plan to save my own seeds at the end of the year) and costs for the soil blocks, I estimate we'll save at least $1000 on chemical-free produce.
I'll be planting
potatoes (Yellow Finn and Sweet)
onions
tomatoes (beefsteak, Roma, cherry)
green beans
carrots
melons (honeydew, watermelon, cantaloupe)
cabbage
beets
celery
sweet corn
cucumbers
salad greens (bibb, romaine, oak leaf, leaf)
spinach
green peas
peppers (jalapeno, hot banana, sweet bell)
pumpkins
zucchini
spaghetti squash
butternut squash
kale
broccoli
Brussels sprouts
parsnips
artichokes
