It seems I don't have time to start this post until two days after I get the goods! This week we got blackberries, zucchini/yelllow squash, red potatoes, beets, lettuce, sunflower sprouts and red onions. I've already used all the squash. I need ideas for the sunflower sprouts and am headed off to search recipes. Will share if I find anything.
What'd you get?
Some Things Cookin' at my blog!
This is what we got on June 27th: Mesclun, Zucchini, Fennel, Celery, Overwintered Onions, Italian Kale, Napa Cabbage, Chioggia Beets, Garlic Scapes and Cilantro
We won't get our CSA on the 4th because many of the places they deliver will be closed. We'll get our next one on the 5th. I've used everything except the beets. They're going to go into an orange-beet salad to share with friends at our Independence Day celebration on the 3rd.
Not sure how it is in NJ, but in Florida we are on perpetual water restrictions, but businesses and farms are not included in that. There's a state law that says nothing can be done to restrict a "man's ability to earn a living", which is funny because my farm to porch delivery is owned by a woman.
Quoting scapermom:
We are in central New Jersey. We had been having cool nights & hot days. Now it's just hot all the time! Plus a water restriction due to a water main break. Not sure how this will effect the farm we get our veggies from. Last year they had to cut the growing season short because there was too much rain. When you do a CSA you really learn about the farming life (without all that hard work of course!). I'm originally from Brooklyn, so it's a big step for me... ;-)
We've had a similar weather pattern in central AZ-warm days cool nights and then just plain ol' hot all the time!
Yes, I think being part of a CSA brings a greater appreciation for the work a farmer does, plus more respect for the food we eat.
