I've been back from our road trip for almost a week and just now feel settled in enough to share a few things about the "adventure".
I was looking forward to eating out-you know, being able to eat without having to do the work-but was mostly disappointed. I should have been prepared for that, but DH said San Antonio was known for a number of cuisines.
First, the hot breakfast available at the hotel was mostly premade stuff. They cooked the pancakes right there, and probably the scrambled eggs, but I'm sure the eggs were either powdered or from cartons. The sausage was the best part. They didn't even have real butter! It was free though, so...
The dinner we had for my step daughter's celebration was supposed to be authentic Tex-Mex and if it was, they can keep it, lol.
On Saturday we had pretty good food, but the tab was $200 for 8 people. An average of $25/ person for LUNCH! A few of us had appetizers for our meal and 1 of the 8 was my son whose full meal was only $5.
The hotel also offered a hot evening buffet that we had missed the first two nights, so we made a point of going the third night. Hot dogs, mac n cheese, nachos (liquid cheese mix) and a couple of other things along those lines that I can't recall. I chose not to partake.
After we checked out Sunday we had lunch at the River Center Mall. We just wanted something decent at an affordable price. We got pizza from the food court restaurant of one of the pricier Italian places we had seen outside. Still just so-so.
The best food we had was in Lordsburg, NM on the way home. They have an excellent beef and green chili stew that we get everytime we pass thru. While in SA, the best thing we had was the chocolates we went out for late one night!
Needless to say I was terribly disappointed at spending so much for such blah food. Anyone else have this happen while travelling?
exactly what I tell my DD when she has food from her friends house , grant you I am not picking on anyone the friends parents don't cook much always pizza ordered in or , simple things , processed foods something quick.
She came home and said "taste this hamburger Mommy it is different nothing like yours." Then had one of my porcupine balls and claimed "there that is the stuff I like and am used to Mom's good cooking" :-) I am glad she sees the difference and hopefully carries on Mom's/ her Dad's cooking skills and thoughts.
I feel I did my job well with her statement.
Quoting michiganmom116:Your taste buds aren't typical since you're used to eating real foods.
When we are traveling, we look for the smaller homestyle restaurants. We've even asked before ordering if their eggs are real or made from powdered, if the mashed potatoes are made from instant, if soups are canned or homemade, etc.
It's disappointing, isn't it?

I didn't have much good food on our trip either!

If there is a local restaurant that has several locations, it's usually good. (Like Jaxon's in El Paso ... always good!) In Chicago, the best food is usually in small locally owned restaurants endorsed by celebrities who have dined there. In St. Louis, you have to get away from "the city" to find good food. And so on.
I hate "stuffing" at the breakfast buffet. We go in, get a box of cereal-fresh fruit-milk, and we're done. The rest of the day taste a lot better.
Yes, especially at tourist destinations!

I had some amazing food when I travel in May. BUT I went to see friends and they took me to local dives that were fabulous! I would have never found the best German restaurant in America close to Orlando Florida!! Who knew!
