Most Alarming Food Recalls of the Year Have Us Wondering What's Safe to Eat

You know, as we report on all these food recalls week after week, it just starts to get to us. There sure are a heck of a lot of food recalls! I know there's also a lot of FOOD produced every single day. The vast majority of it is perfectly safe and doesn't make us ill (immediately, anyway). But from where I sit, it looks like we still have way too many cases of food contamination going on these days.

I guess you could call it gallows humor -- but what if we picked a few of the worst ones from that past year or so? You know, a sort of Food Recall Hall of Shame, if you will. Here are some of the food calamities that gave us the worst indigestion.

wash everything throughly , watch for no contamination , thaw in the refrigerator ....

It is scary!  Of the 5 worst, though, I have to say that every bit of that food had been handled by someone else (beyond handling for shipping). 

What's safe to eat?  whole foods, and buying local is even better.  There are some whole foods that have been subject to contamination, but generally whole foods are handled by unknown people the least.  Proper cleaning and handling techniques on OUR part should take care of any problems.

There have been a lot of recalls in the news lately.  I try to be careful and make smart purchases, wash foods well, and take all precautions.  Hopefully that will be enough.

It's the major symptom of a food system gone bad.  Can't keep messing with the natural order of things and not expect a few disasters.

E Coli wouldn't be present in large enough quantities to make the average person ill, let alone kill people if cattle grazed on grass their whole life instead of being confined to feed lots for the last few months of their lives.  The sludge and slime that washes away from CAFO operations is partly responsible for the fresh produce recalls.

Let chickens run free instead of being caged in horrendous conditions and salmonella wouldn't grow to the point of sickening people.
