Apple Jalousie

Makes: 12 servings

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 Granny Smith apples (about 1 pound), peeled, cored and thinly sliced

  • 1/4 cup packed light or dark-brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup dried tart cherries, coarsely chopped or sweetened dried cranberries

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch blended with 1 tablespoon brandy or apple juice

  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed (from a 17.3 ounce package)

  • 1 egg white

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Directions 1. Heat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with nonstick foil. Set aside.

2. Melt butter in a 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Add apple slices and sauté for 5 minutes to brown slightly, stirring occasionally.

3. Stir in sugar, cherries and cinnamon. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook about 2 minutes until sugar is dissolved. Stir in cornstarch mixture and cook 1 minute until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in walnuts.

4. Unfold pastry sheet. Cut in half lengthwise, parallel to the fold. Working quickly on a lightly floured surface, roll out one pastry half to a 12 x 5-inch rectangle. Transfer to prepared baking sheet. Spoon apple mixture over pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around all edges.

5. Brush edges with egg white. Roll out second half of the pastry to a 12-1/2 x 6-inch rectangle. Fold pastry in half along the length and then cut slits in dough, but not all the way through to edge. Transfer on top of filling, then unfold. Pinch together at edge.

6. Brush pastry with egg white and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

I'll make it, but I don't provide delivery, so you'll have to come here, and you'd better hurry because it doesn't last long. lol

Quoting Kelly913:

Will you make one and bring it over?  :-)

Quoting SweetLuci:

I love how easy puff pastry dough is to work with, much easier than pie crust dough, and it makes such a great impression.

Quoting aenima49:

Oh my goodness this looks amazing!
