OK Mat has worked at the same job for the last 9 years. He has been sick with a bad cold, so yesterday morning he took some cough medicine that was prescribed to our 16yr old son. It has codine in it. Once a month they randomly pick 5 peoples id #s for random drug test. His showed traces of codine in it and so now he is suspended until Tuesday. They said if its just trace amounts then he will come back. This just isn't good. I mean seriously cough medicine

Well yeah, it has codine a highly addictive drug. Its just as bad a regular druggie. Why didn't he just take an otc cough syrup?

It Was a medicine that wasn't prescribed to him, in our state (work at will) he would of been fired.

That would piss me off too. After 9 years im sure they know hes not a drug addict. But im sure they are just following protocol too. He will go back next week. In the meantime he should concentrate on getting better.

Maybe he could have told them before he took the test and it wouldnt have been as big of a deal? Sucks tho. Taking meds not prescribed to ya can be a big deal

Well, he did take prescription medication that wasn't prescribed to him. That can't be disputed. Sorry, but it's the truth. That is illegal.

Don't hate the system. It's your husband's fault, not his employer.

Unfortunate as it may be, technically speaking your DH was in the wrong.  Hopefully, it will only be a suspension & not a termination.
