Why does everyone pay for internet?

With all the free wifi places out there why pay for it?

Now, I bought my own wireless router at Best Buy.  But, it still has to connect to a modem (yes you can buy your own).  But the modem still has to have an ISP, which costs a monthly fee.

Please explain which device you purchased and exactly HOW it gets you free internet service.

My kids go to an online school. My SO & I both take classes online. I do pay for internet since I don't want to be out of the house all the time.

I am old school, I still have a desktop. Its only 3 years old and they aren't cheap! I plan on getting a laptop for school but I would never get rid of my desktop,I love it.

Good questions, I think because eith 1 people dont want to sit at places that offer, and most often it runs slower then what you have at home.

Because i have a business where i need 24/7 access and it would be a huge pain in the butt to have to get the kids and go 20 min down the road everytime i need internet. plus i dont drive. and some people do not have laptops they might as well pay instead of buying a laptop. and we only pay $90 for phone inernet an cable
