I know there is an equation you can use but I forget it since I am a math idiot. Basically I know I fill my tank twice a week and its roughly $30 a fill up.
Gas is one of those budget items that I'll leave some leeway in.
My DH gets $40/week for gas. That is enough to give him some extra in case prices go up, and if they go over $4/gallon again then he'll get an extra $5/week. I am a SAHM, so I try to do just that: stay at home. I plan one day a week to get all of my errands done. I can go weeks without having to put gas in my vehicle.
I calculate how much gas money I need just for going to work and home. Then a throw on one more tank full for extra stuff for the month. I usually end up with a little extra which I just put away. It works out really well.
