This is why keeping maintenance up is important. Oil changes, tune ups, etc. All need to be done regularly to avoid any unnecessary big expenses later.
We usually pay for parts OR labor depending on the deal my dad makes with the guy. But my dad and I aren't speaking anymore so I guess I'm on my own with it now LOL
DH and I drive 13 and 14 yr old vehicles. We've seen some good sized repair bills. If the repair is something that we can't do ourselves because we don't have the tools or equipment (think transmission, new engine, replacing ball joints, replacing brake lines) then we'll take it to the mechanic and pay for it out of our emergency fund. Otherwise, one of our sons does a lot of the regular maintenance (oil changes, replacing brake pads & rotors, replacing valves, etc.) We just pay for parts and supplies.
My SIL does the upkeep on our vehicles. =)
