Do you sometime wish to sew your own clothes?

I am always too tired finding  the right fit and modest clothing. I am thinking of buying a sewing machine. I don't know if its a good idea...anyone had an experience with this? Is it a bad idea? Any suggestions? I have two kids and one is an infant, I don't think i would ever have time to do it...how long does it take to learn?

Thanks!

I have to admit I love making my own curtains and having something others can only wish they had.. hehe,, yeah slightly evil but my house looks like it cost three times as much to decorate than it actually did. Custom curtains, pillows, and some nice HomeGoods finds and my lin\ving room looks like a lived in version of designer chic.

WOW!!! You really sew all your clothes? Now thats some super woman work there :D. I will check the machine once I get home. Thank you for helping out! I will def PM you.

Oh geez! if I didn't sew my own clothes I'd have little to nothing to wear!

feel free to PM me if you want suggestions. as for how long it takes to learn, that depends. I think it would probably be best to start with a skirt.Pattern companies have some easy patterns that aren't as overwhelming as others. :)

here's the machine that is pretty close to the one I have, and I love it!

Brother zxczxczxcSewing Machine

here's a link to where they are selling it on Amazon, and you can do a close up to see the machine features:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GXPOAM/?tag=hyprod-20&hvadid=15474590619&hvpos=1o1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15416657071730651525&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&ref=asc_df_B005GXPOAM

I love this machine, one reason is because you have the choice of different speeds. when my original one had a little 'accient' (long story) I was going to buy a less expensive machine and spend the difference on a serger. I took the machine back after 3 days and just bought the model I had all over again! I SO missed being able to set the machine for slower speed when I wanted, and this model has a overlocking stitch. it gives a affect very close to what a serger does.

it has nice decorative stiches which are fun.

most importantly, it's built VERY well! I love Brother products and I feel that they don't make their products to wear out fast like some companies.

I could write a book here on how to get started on sewing! I think it's VERY worth it to be able to make something rather than spend hours looking for a piece of clothing that you may just not find or be happy with in the stores.

feel free to PM me, or ask more questions if you like.

btw: as for finding time to sew? that I proabably can't help with that much! :)

I sew about 85 percent of them. Sometimes I get lucky and find a t shirt or stretch pants for the gym in stores. but most of the time no. I've always sewn since I was about 20, but didn't used to sew everyday clothes that much. Then one day I went shopping for pants. After 5 hours and 3 stores,  I found one pair that would work at all, and I didnt' really like them.

So I stomped out of the store, went home and set up the sewing machine and started making pants. That's how I started making most of my own clothes.

I don't like spending my time trying things on and then end up settling for a top that I'd rather have in another color. between going out, messing with dressing rooms and check out lines it's less work just to sew the stupid thing.

feel free to pm me, looking forward to talking to you!

1 mom liked this

I have a sewing machine and yes, it does require a certain amount of time to learn how to sew and to even put and outfit together, I plan on taking a sewing class hopefully this fall, I'm in NY so the sewing class that I will take will be a few hours a week for a few months, I have to look into it.  I make basic shirts and blouses now, so I look forward to learning how to really put nice things together. I think it's a very good idea to buy a sewing machine, I look forward to having a little more time for sewing.

All the best and have fun!

isn't that the coolest part of being able to sew? I sew curtains sometimes that would have cost lots of $$$ if I had it done. and don't get me started on Pillows! I sewed 3 of them recently, I used the pillow forms that came from some ugly pillows. I bought the pillows at a store closing sale.

I tried to tell my husband that I should get a 'wife shopping credit' since they probably would have cost about 75 dollars. He didn't go for that!   *sigh*

Yeah, paintings and drawings never turn out like in my head either.

Quoting hira12:

Thats how my paintings turn out usually..lol..keep trying..maybe you need a better machine..

Quoting Bleacheddecay:

I do sometimes because I have great ideas, know exactly what I want but all my attempts at sewing have been very sad and bad.

I can make clothing just not very well. My mil is a huge help. Sometimes I feel it is more expensive though because the cost of cotton is fairly high.

It can be done though!

I'm making a dress for my daughter today (for the first time ever) and I'm doing it by hand since I don't have a sewing machine. Fabric is really expensive so I like to repurpose clothing and make other stuff out of it. I wish I had a sewing machine
