When things get a little tight, where do you start when you have to cut costs?
Groceries. It's your most flexible budget item. Next I would look at cutting back on cable, make sure I'm keeping lights off, see what I could to do make my house more energy efficient (your utility company will have suggestions and a lot of them will even come out and inspect your house to make suggestions for free!), see about changing cell phone plans, shop around for a better rate on car insurance, etc.
Groceries because there is always flex room there for the most part...then cancelling premium channels on cable, then packing lunch to work every day instead of 3 x a week....
We have already cut most of what we could. no cable, no home phone, cheap cell plans, cheapest internet we could find, shopped around and have the cheapest car insurance we could get, stopped going to salons, and go to the beauty school instead, my hubby cuts our 2 sons hair, I barter for what I can. We RARELY have date nights, or eat out at all. I bargain hunt like mad, but still need to get better at it.
groceries & utilities, travel that isn't for work. Clothing and gifts are another area.
cable, excessive driving, groceries. I'm not giving up my internet though!
entertainment ( cable, internet)
